How did you become involved in the practice of Maya Abdominal Therapy?

In 2001, I was traveling in Mexico when I signed up for a traditional Maya massage treatment with a Maya shaman. Without having exchanged a word with him about my health concerns (primarily digestive and fertility issues) the shaman immediately sensed my imbalances and began to work on my abdomen and uterus. It was the most profound massage of my life. Just a couple of weeks later, my fertility concerns were over when I discovered my husband and I had miraculously conceived a baby.

As my belly grew, I began to research more about the ancient practice of Maya uterine massage and found Dr. Rosita Arvigo from Belize, who was traveling to the states to train health practitioners in this ancient modality. She had trained for a decade with a renowned Maya shaman from Belize, learning the same ancient technique that I’d experienced in Mexico. I learned that my “tipped” uterus was likely the cause of my menstrual difficulties and fertility struggles--even my digestive symptoms. Because of my retroverted uterus, I experienced a very long and difficult labor, but nonetheless delivered my daughter at home with a midwife. Intrigued to learn more about my uterus and this modality, I signed up for the Arvigo self-care massage instruction workshop a couple of years after my daughter's birth.

I was then fully convinced I was on the right path of healing for myself ~ and for my future clients. I enrolled in massage school right away so that I could attend the next level of Arvigo's professional training. As a certified massage therapist and advanced practitioner of the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy, I have been practicing this modality since 2004. It was an easy career transition for me, having worked as a professional holistic health writer and editor for the past 20 years, publishing articles on a variety of alternative healing topics in magazines such as Yoga Journal, Mothering, and Alternative Medicine.
